In Buddhist literature Sarnath during Buddha’s times was also referred as Mrigadava- “The Land of Deer”. During those times the entire area had a wide forest cover, providing sanctuary to a large number of deer. The forest department has developed a deer park in 1978, behind Mulgandha Kuti Vihar to maintain the same old touch as in the time of Lord Buddha. Spotted deer (AXIS-AXIS), Crane, Finched, Paleheaded Rosella, Love bird, Parakeet, Rabbit are some of the varieties of animals & birds which can be seen in the park.
