A cathedral like public library is situated within the premises of Chandra Shekhar Azad Park, which is the oldest library of the city. It houses large collection of rare books, viz., old government publications, parliamentary papers & old blue books of the 19th century. The library was dedicated to the memory of Lord Thornhil & Mayne (then commissioner & collector respectively). Initially the library was founded in 1846 at Chaitham lines area of the city and it was shifted to the present building in 1878. Earlier it was museum cum library but now it has been converted into library. The building built of sandstone is the wonderful representation of Gothic architecture with a rich history attach to it. It had the privilege of hosting the first legislative council meeting on Jan-8th 1887.
