The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be the place where Saint Agastya used to worship Lord Shiva in his ashram. Hence, the Shivling is known as Agastyeshwar Ling. He also dug a kund nearby, known as Agastya Kund, where he used to take bath.
