It was established in 1910-11 as a Hindi University & conducts its own examination for certificates of Prathma, Visharad & Sahitya Ratna. The establishment is engaged in promoting Hindi language. About 15,000 manuscripts & 1,00,000 books in its library make it the largest collections of Hindi books in the world. It was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936. The building is a good example of Indian architecture and is also equipped with a press, library, museum and administrative building. In a separate room documents related to Purushottam Das Tandon are displayed. Printed books, periodicals, manuscripts, coins, letters, photographs, memoirs, trophies and personal belongings of literary persons form the rich collection of this institution.
