Harishchandra Research Institute (HRI), is an autonomous research institution named after the mathematician Harish Chandra & is funded by Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India. The institute was started in 1975, on an endowment from B.S. Mehta Trust, Kolkata and till 2001 it was named the Mehta Research Institute. In 1992, the institute acquired 66 acres of land in Jhunsi and in 1996 the institute shifted in the new campus after the approval of Govt. of Uttar Pradesh & DAE. Till 10th Oct. 2000 the Institute was known as Mehta Mathematical & Mathematical Physics Institute but in Oct. 2000, its name has been changed to Harishchandra Research Institute (HRI). Research at HRI is focused on mathematics & theoretical Physics. The institute has a graduate programme leading to Ph.D. Degree.
